2018 was overall a positive year for the Northern Ireland business and economic landscape, with economic output up 1.2% compared to the previous quarter and job vacancies at a record high for people living in the province.
For businesses great and small, one common denominator resonated among all last year and that was the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulations, or simply put, GDPR planned by the European Parliament and Council in April 2016 and put into effect on May 25th 2018. The aim of the regulations was to create more consistent protection of consumer and personal data among EU nations, giving customers the power to control where their personal information is shared and by whom. A baseline of standards has been set for companies like ourselves to follow, safeguarding the processing and movement of citizens personal data. The impact on both companies and customers has been hugely significant.
As a well established organisation, Riada were keen to align ourselves with the GDPR principles, embracing the enhanced levels of compliance steps and procedures. The introduction of GDPR enabled us and many other companies to reassess and grow our business policies for the better. Now, almost 8 months later, we are seeing and feeling positive effects on a number of aspects of our business model.
